Throughout the winter of 1916-1917, 12th East Surrey of 122 Brigade, 41st Division, were in the Ypres salient, mostly in the Diependaal sub-sector near St Eloi. One of their tours of the front line here was from 27th February to 5th March. Albert Fewtrell was killed in action on 5th March, the day they were relieved but there is no mention of this in the Battalion Diary. He may well have been killed during the actual relief by 20th Durham Light Infantry as this was a time when the enemy would often target the trenches, with their artillery or trench mortars, when both the outgoing and incoming battalions were at their most vulnerable. |
